Offboarding a fractional Chief of Staff

One of the most rewarding (and bittersweet) aspects of working as a fractional Chief of Staff is knowing that your role is temporary by design. I have the privilege of partnering with some incredible clients—leaders who have taken bold steps to transform their businesses.

At some point, my chapter with them comes to an end. While there’s always a twinge of ambivalence in wrapping up, I remind myself: the goal of my work isn’t permanence—it’s progress.

What Offboarding Looks Like

A successful fractional engagement doesn’t just end—it transitions smoothly to ensure lasting impact. Here’s what offboarding typically involves:

  1. Knowledge Transfer: Ensuring that all key processes, systems, and insights are documented and accessible so the team can carry forward the work seamlessly.

  2. Leadership Transition: Whether handing off responsibilities to a new hire, an internal leader, or a newly formed operations team, the transition is carefully planned to set them up for success.

  3. Final Strategy Alignment: Reviewing progress, outstanding priorities, and the long-term vision to ensure continued momentum.

  4. Post-Engagement Support: Depending on the needs of the organization, this could include periodic check-ins, advisory support, or simply staying on as a trusted resource.

Always Cheering You On

My role is to equip these leaders and their teams with the tools, clarity, and momentum to soar. And as they do, I get to transition into their biggest cheerleader, celebrating their wins from the sidelines.

To all my clients—past, present, and future—thank you for trusting me to be part of your journey. Here’s to growth, new chapters, and cheering you on every step of the way! 🪴✨
